James A. Murphy, III, served for ten years as the County Court Judge for Saratoga County and an Acting Justice of the Supreme Court of the State of New York. He presided over serious felony jury trials and complex civil litigation. Prior to his election to the bench, Jim served 25 years as a prosecutor. He was elected to the post of Saratoga County District Attorney in 1997 and re-elected to subsequent 4-year terms in 2001, 2005, 2009 and 2013.

As District Attorney, Jim established drug treatment courts, alternative to prison programs, the state’s first Domestic Violence Integrated Court, and lobbied the State Legislature for Rockefeller drug law reform. Governors Pataki, Spitzer, and Cuomo appointed him to statewide boards including the Commission for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and the Forensic Science Commission. He is a graduate of the FBI Citizens Academy and earned a Certificate in Leadership from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. 

Jim and wife Laurie reside in Saratoga Springs. They have two adult daughters. He is also a US Rowing Referee.
