SCHENECTADY — Callanan Industries of Albany has won a national award for its sustainable approach to resurfacing I-88 in Schenectady County.

Callanan used a combination of 20-percent reclaimed asphalt and warm-mix asphalt, providing environmental protection benefits while achieving the New York State Department of Transportation's requirements for proper skid resistance. The use of reclaimed asphalt from other projects conserves virgin natural resources. Warm-mix asphalt, which is produced and applied at significantly lower temperatures than traditional asphalt, reduces energy consumption and air emissions at the production facility, and has also been shown to provide longer pavement life.

The company's use of these sustainable paving techniques earned a 2015 Quality in Construction Award from The National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA).

The award-winning project encompassed the heavily traveled, 13-mile stretch of I-88 from the Exit 25A interchange to the Schoharie County border over the 2014 and 2015 paving seasons.

Callanan Industries has been an Upstate New York leader in aggregate, asphalt and concrete products and construction services for more than 130 years. Established in Albany County in 1883, Callanan has been a subsidiary of Oldcastle Materials Inc. since 1985.
